OGB and OpenSolaris Futures discussion

   - Dennis described his call with the CTO of HP to discuss OpenSolaris and
HP. He asked whether it would be appropriate to contact Oracle executives to
discuss their OpenSolaris directions. *Action*: By next week Dennis to
provide a summary of call attempt(s).
   - The discussion then proceeded to deal with concerns over the future of
the developer community and Oracle's attitude towards it. Simon's suggestion
to poll the community about its priorities was raised as a useful starting
point to progress this discussion and to determine what the OGB should be
   focusing on.
   - Dennis raised the point that it has been over 5 years since the pilot
(September 13, 2004 ) and thus far it is unclear how a community member
would be able to build an Opensolaris(tm) distro. Dennis sees this as a
barrier for an open source project where the community members wait for a
*reference build* from a corporation as opposed to having the general
populace being able to simply build it themselves and use it everywhere. He
acknowledged the community depends on the closed binaries being built for us
but that should not a barrier to building a distribution *easily*.

Policy review and familiarization

    All present!

   - Dennis has attempted to talk with Oracle executives, he usually ends up
being directed to Sales people. When direct questions are asked about
Solaris or OpenSolaris there is a point blank answer of dead silence. Dennis
had a *full and frank* conversation with Dan Roberts. It was suggested
that the other person to contact within Oracle would be Vincent Murphy.
   - Joerg sent mail to Dave Stewart (digitalDave of Intel) asking why his
videos on Intel/Solaris collaboration are no longer being sent, he said
someone else had taken over the relationship (Bob Kasten).
   - Need to reach out to Roland Mainz to discuss the "broo-ha-ha" over the
ksh93 issues that have been raised. The question was raised asking if the
OGB should weigh into the matter and issue some type of public statement.
   - John asked Simon how to get the Community Outreach conversation going.
Simon suggested that the OGB list be used to raise the initial questions.
*Action*: Simon to begin the conversation on OGB mailing list.
   - Congratulations to Simon Phipps on his new position - OpenSSO and
   OpenESB live on.
   - Dennis raised his concern over the ability of new people to join the
OpenSolaris project and be able to download/build/install without
traps/tricks etc. After 5 years this process should be straightforward
enough such that a developer with reasonable skills would be able to get
   something going very quickly.

    Peter out

   - Dennis is still working on making some progress with the corporate
   Oracle contacts.
   - ksh - feedback from community indicates there's no problem. Our action
of reaching out and asking was the appropriate response.
   - Dennis proposed getting the community to help build a reference
   distribution.

5/24 - no quorum, no meeting

    Moinak, Peter, Dennis out

   - report on distro community conversation
   - Suggested that an open letter to Oracle be drafted to try and get any
feedback from them on the future of OpenSolaris and the role of the OGB

http://wiki.genunix.org:8080/wiki/index.php/2010_06_14_OGB_Agenda
    Peter, Simon, Dennis out

   - Still unable to get calls returned from Oracle folks who are
   responsible for OpenSolaris.
   - It is still not possible to divine Oracle's attitude towards a
   community based approach to OpenSolaris.
   - John discussed some of the projects that Oracle have been "absorbed"
   (i.e. made internal).
   - *Action:* Neale to raise establishment of the user group on the
website-discuss mailing list indicating that the OGB approves the proposal.
