+---- Feb 10, 2006, from Sun: http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Community+Group+ogb/charter | Whereby Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Sun) has granted license to a certain | subset of its Solaris Operating System, known henceforth as OpenSolaris, | to all under terms compatible with Open Source ideals, and whereby | open and constructive development and dissemination of this code base | is desired by all, Sun does by the execution of this charter all of the | following: First, establish an OpenSolaris Governing Board (OGB) to | manage and direct an OpenSolaris community in its efforts to improve | upon and advocate in favor of OpenSolaris, so that the community may | long endure. ... +----
compared to +---- Today, Friday, 13 August, 2010, from Oracle: http://pastebin.com/YtuvZkUJ | We (Oracle) will distribute updates to approved CDDL or other open | source-licensed code following full releases of our enterprise Solaris | operating system. In this manner, new technology innovations will | show up in our releases before anywhere else. We will no longer | distribute source code for the entirety of the Solaris operating | system in real-time while it is developed, on a nightly basis. +---- That's all Folks, It seems Oracle is no longer interested in working with an external community to develop new versions of Solaris. Without such a partnership, there is no longer any way for our OpenSolaris development community to continue as it was chartered. Rather than continue waiting for a more positive outcome, I believe it is time to let Oracle reconstitute things under some other umbrella, if they so choose. In order to facilitate an orderly transition, I will call for a motion to officially dissolve the OpenSolaris Governing Board at the OGB's 8am (California time) meeting on August 23: http://wiki.genunix.org:8080/wiki/index.php/2010_08_23_OGB_Agenda I fondly recall all the OpenSolaris Summits where many of us got together, drank together, and had a great time building a community together. The same goes for all those visits in various cities where we somehow again managed to find a pub and meet face to face... Anyone else up for a good ol' Irish wake? As the old CB radio chatter would have it, and apropos of the new and vibrant IllumOS effort: "10-4 on a great road trip, good buddies; catch you all again on the flip side". -John Plocher OGB Chair _______________________________________________ ogb-discuss mailing list ogb-discuss@opensolaris.org http://mail.opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/ogb-discuss
