The reason I absolutely LOATH the Midichlorians is because it makes the force quantifiable. It's got this whole 1985 or what's the other big brother type book? I forget the name. Anyway it's like reading someone's DNA and saying: "Oh, this one is going to become a criminal and this one will become a doctor." I know many of us are scientists and what not here but.... The best thing Lucas ever creates was the Force. The Force is a de-personalized representation of God. God without the beard and sandals. God without being wrathful or loving or anything. The spark of the divine that exists in all things the way the Native American 'Great Spirit' did. Now suddenly it's a virus?
That said, from a storyteller perspective it's a kick in the pants too. How am I supposed to surprise someone with random prophecy and keep my players guessing? "The old man comes forward, babbling about the giant worm that is going to destroy you. Ok, we check his Midichlorians to see if he's got the force to tell that." WHAT!?!?!?
|Midichlorians aren't the best idea Lucas ever came up with,
|but they're hardly
|the worst. Technology and magic are basically the same thing
|-- separated by
|knowledge. Back in the good old days, the Jedi knew all about
|the little things,
|but by the time it was just Ben and Yoda around, it wasn't so
|important any
|more. And who wants to take the time to explain to a farmer
|boy from a backwater
|planet that he has Midichlorians in his blood? it's much more
|impressive to talk
|about the Force being in all things, in all places.
