To all of this, I must add the following bit of advice -- if you plan to
make a living writing or doing anything creative, do not live in the San
Francisco Bay area or New York City. When you're living on Ramen noodles and
Macaroni and Cheese, it's a little difficult to afford the $1500 a month
for a one bedroom apartment. The alternative is to work full time to pay for
the apartment, but that gives you far less time to work on your side
projects. I know from experience, currently trying to find the time (and the
staff) to work on finishing up some of my own projects (among them,
http://www.iconoclast.org).

To paraphrase Kermit the Frog, "it ain't easy when you don't have the
green."

I'd be interested in hearing where other list members live, and how much the
cost of living helps or hinders their current Gaming Development
aspirations.

"Moralists have always wondered helplessly why Poe's 'morbid' tales need
have been written. They need to be written because old things need to die
and disintegrate, because the old write psyche has to be gradually broken
down before anything else can come to pass. Man must be stripped even of
himself. And it is a painful, sometimes a ghastly process."
