I want to have original classes and races, which would have to have some sort of generation
explained. It will be OGL, but not d20. Is there anything I need to know to avoid problems,
keep everything legal, etc?

Firstly, original classes and races are perfectly fine under the D20 license. You just can't say "pick a class, then a race".

The way to keep things legal under the OGL is:
a)Do not use material which is not open. Avoid anything published by WOTC except the SRD.
b)Make sure your "section 15" is correct.
c)Clearly identify open gaming content.
d)Do not use trademarks without permission.

The D20 license is trickier, but the OGL is pretty easy.
