I think this is a VERY important issue for fan-based computer products.
Ryan has flirted with the idea of a standardized way of describing
characters, monsters, and game objects in a digital format. Now that I've
seen some 3e stuff, I think that XML would be a VERY good way to do this,
relying on the stat blocks of various game objects. If a standard isn't
created by the time the info is public, expect to see a proposal or three
from various sources.

Some discussion of that on the d20 list, not so much on this one. There is
no consensus, but there are two camps on the issue - one who says it is
possible, the other who says that it isn't. Time will tell who is right,
perhaps even both of them.

You can build a game based on the d20 SRD without using the d20 logo, but it
must be OGL. The copyright law you quote is basically accurate, but it is
untested in this context. If you make something successful you should plan
on being challenged. On the other hand, the OGL will allow you to do
exactly what you propose.

Yes. The d20 SRD will be released under the OGL, meaning you can use the
rules however you like if you don't want to use the d20 Logo.

The D20 STL says you can use the logo only if your product does not "contain
information on creating characters compatible with d20". Using the system
internally even if you never show it to the players certainly constitutes a
violation of this phrase, since your code would have to contain the
information needed to create characters. It could be OGL, but not D20.
