The funny thing to me is that the entire "movement" is based on that Theory
of Network Externalities business. Screwing other content producers is the
*last* thing WOTC would want to do if the Theory holds. (Well, maybe second
to last :))
Personally, I think that WOTC is playing it a little tight to the vest (with
the product ID stuff, trademarks, etc.), but its far more sensible to do so
now and then open it later (if circumstances permit) than it is to just open
it all up and then desperately try to put the genie back in the bottle
later.
In spite of this looking greedy on WOTC's part, this is actually a Good
Thing (TM used without permission ;)) because the entire community would
suffer if the trademarks of DnD, which are the driving force behind the
value of the license anyway, gets diluted by being corrupted by everyone
else.
Of course, all this is predicated on my reading and interpretation of the
appropriate documents and I am (after all) not a lawyer (or even
businessman).
