In all fairness, I think these people were only trying to help. But
that's the problem, you had good willed, intelligent people slandering
you and nay saying this project from the start.
I believe you could have prevented _some_ of that by developing an
official FAQ and providing the public with a stronger
government/structure for the OGF.
I'm sure you are one of those highly intelligent people who expects
everyone to be able to think on your level, but they can't. This
project receives more damage from it's own inability to officially clear
up confusion than from conspiracy theorists, IMO. As it stands d20/OGL
is for two kinds of people: the business minded and people with enough
money to hire lawyers. Everyone else would be a fool to get involved in
this, but they'll do it anyway, make huge mistakes, and then you will
really see the conspiracies fly.
Confusion, tasteless usage of d20, and legal ignorance are going to be
serious problems for Open Gaming. The OGF might not want to be legally
responsible for these matters but it will have to deal with the
consequences of their occurrence. Once again I have to urge that the OGF
take on a stronger public image. 1. Adopt/create an official FAQ. 2. do
something to promote legal council. For example you could limit the
registry to people/projects with proof that they have seen a practicing
attorney. 3. Promote the OGF. For example, don't let bad press be the
first voice on lists like DND-L 4. Set up a nifty "club" with perks for
members who don't, for example, make d20 porn games.
I could go on and on about this, but I really, really, really think that
the OGF needs to be as proactive as possible on these issues. Conspiracy
Theorists are a symptom of a bigger problem, IMO.
