I would venture to say (going out on a limb here & teasing Ryan somewhat) 
that for veteran gamers "3rd Edition" might even be a STRONGER brand than 
"D&D" itself.  After all, to say "D&D" invites confusion ("Which VERSION?") 
while *EVERYBODY* knows what you mean whan you say "3rd Edition"    :D
