I agree. Some friends and I played Star Trek (classic)
way before there were any Star Trek games. We created
a new captain character to lead the old crew to
recover Kirk. They other characters were so well known
we didnt even have character sheets or stats or
anything. We made up success chances on the fly
(probably only possible with my players, who were
experienced and we trusted each other; hard to do with
new players you arent comfortable with). There was no
game system at all. None. And we ran starship combat
and ground combat, etc. Now, granted, it helped that
we were all very familiar with the source material.

Anyway, I can say those were without a doubt some of
the very best games I have ever run--and I have been
doing this for 23 years. Removing the mechanics let us
focus on pure roleplaying.
