Some friends and I played Star Trek (classic) way before there were any Star Trek games. We created a new captain character to lead the old crew to recover Kirk. They other characters were so well known we didnt even have character sheets or stats or anything. We made up success chances on the fly (probably only possible with my players, who were experienced and we trusted each other; hard to do with new players you arent comfortable with). There was no game system at all. None. And we ran starship combat and ground combat, etc. Now, granted, it helped that we were all very familiar with the source material. Anyway, I can say those were without a doubt some of the very best games I have ever run--and I have been doing this for 23 years. Removing the mechanics let us focus on pure roleplaying.
