Alex-
"If Necromancer games feels that they could have done
things differently with the Creature Collection then
why don't they just OGC the names now? Nobody said you
can't open PI up later right?"
First of all, CC is a Sword and Sorcery release. So I
dont get the final call. Steve and I make that one.
Plus, just because we could have done things different
doesnt mean we would change them or even if we would
change them that now is the time to do it. I dont want
to speak for Steve, but I dont imagine changing
anything before the full SRD is released to see how
WotC does it in final form.
Plus it would be hard to un-PI stuff. I guess a
publisher could put a license on their site allowing
the use of the PI material or even transfering PI into
open game content. But that is unweildy.
"Also someone please tell me that no one has or is
trying to PI Snowy Frost Ape-whatever-thingy you were
talking about. PI'ing simple derivative
names/creatures, as opposed to a somehow truly unique
overall creation (name and description), just so that
no one else can use it in their products sucks
eggs."
No one is doing this so others cant use it in their
products.
Plus, I think it is wrong to just focus on the words
in the name when deciding about PI. For example, lets
say "Frost Ape" is PI'd. You dont just go to the
dictionary and say, lets see..."frost" is in the
dictionary and "ape" is in the dictionary, so "frost
ape" shouldnt be PI'd because the words are common.
No. That creature is accompanied by art and a
description and is a specific concept of the
particular creature. So the creature is unique even if
the name is not so unique. I do agree that we should
try to use more descriptive or interesting names so
that it is easy to have multiple PI versions of the
creature. Steve and I are talking about all this now
for Creature Collection 2.
"Now I personally think a Dire Hedgehog might qualify
but only because nobody expects Hedgehogs but Dire
anything is derivative too so... Besides I can't wait
to feature a Dire Hedgehog in something."
I was kidding about dire hedgehogs. Though it could be
PI'd, theoretically...
