Hello everyone,

I have some confusion over some of the comments made by Ryan in the
article he wrote for the Dragon special issue. I can't quote the magazine
as I don't have it handy at the moment, but the gist of what I read seemed
to say that you could publish a D20 product that does not strictly use the
D20 system. For example, I could publish a fantasy supplement that uses the
D20 combat rules, but supplements the D20 magic rules with my own version
and still use the D20 logo. I do have some familiarity with application
development, and I do remember reading something (I believe also by Ryan)
that said -

Paraphrasing now:

"The further the system modifications move away from the core, the less
useful they are to the vast majority of users and the less successful they
are likely to be."

That makes sense for open source coding, but in the case of the D20
license I always assumed that these comments referred to changes in D20
genre (I know there is no set D20 genre), not changes to the D20 system. It
seems to me that if I change an aspect of the system, I am no longer truly
D20 compliant so to speak.

My question is this: Can you change aspects of the D20 rule set
(e.g. keep the combat rules but re-write the magic rules.) for your
publication and still put the D20 logo on your product?
