it's a difference of philosophy. if you're doing D20 works because you've always wanted to write D&D stuff, or you want to cash in on the brand name (not necessarily saying that in a bad way), then your philosophy (which, from my POV, boils down to "give away only what we have to"--i.e., strictly rules stuff) makes perfect sense. if, on the other hand, you're doing D20 works because you want to jump on the open content bandwagon, or you are trying to promote open-content works, or you just want your stuff to be open, then the whole *point* is to make sure your stuff is out there and getting reused. i suspect that most of the companise making a commercial venture of D20 materials fall into the 1st category--because that is the more business-savvy attitude in the short term, and thus the one that is more likely to actually result in a viable company. many, if not most, of the fans probably fall into the 2nd category, because they've always had plenty of books to buy (even if the quality wasn't always consistent), so the change isn't availability, or even variety, so much as it's openness. [that's just my observation: IMHO, there isn't that much greater selection now than with AD&D2, what's changed is that it comes from dozens of producers, instead of one or two.] -- woodelf <*> [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://members.home.net/woodelph/ If any religion is right, maybe they all have to be right.
