"The only thing that really bothered me was the
connotations as to the emotional value of someone's
work. When creating a piece of work under the OGL, a
great deal of the point is that you are creating a
gift for others to use."

I agree totally...if I plan on releasing my work under
the OGL or other license, then it must be with the
full understanding that anyone CAN come along and use
it, word-for-word, in their work. In fact, I'm
releasing it as OGC because that is what I WANT to
have happen...I should want others to be able to take
what I've written and use it any way they like, as
long as they acknowledge me in the Copyright Notice.

"To imply that someone might feel 'ripped off'
undermines that."

I agree...some people may not completely understand
that, though...not long ago on the Dominion Games
mailing list, one person came on very upset about how
the DRL would work if he decided to add his
dominion/rules to the game. I think you may have even
replied to that. I added that in there to kinda get a
feel for how some of you may react to your work being
used in the manner in which I described.

"If someone decides that they want to use the
OGC that you created then that means they liked it,
that should be viewed as a compliment."

Yes, I agree again...I certainly would, knowing what I
had created WAS being used by others because they
thought it was good would make me feel it was worth my
effort in writing it.

"When taking from other sources, I think you do need
to keep in mind what the source is. In the case of
Doug, he is one person working on his projects. I'm
sure that he would love to hear from people who want
to
use his work and help with adapting it."

This is true...I picked Doug's work to use as an
example because I know he has worked hard on it, and I
know he is now asking for pay concerning the work on
his site, 3 dollars if you like it, 1 dollar if you
like it but think it has flaws. In my example, I come
in and take the work he has done, adapt it to my game,
and redistribute it. I don't ask for money toward it.
I guess my question may have been aimed more directly
at Doug than anyone else, to get one creator's
perspective on how they feel about their work being
used in a totally different way than what he may have
designed if for...the D20 system.

"There's no need for people to ever find out what you
did with their work..But its cool to find out when
people liked what you did."

Very true, very true...

Clint
