I said that I would do it for awhile, and I'm doing it now. (all text
in this e-mail is hereby public domain, and may be used in any legal
fashion. I am not a lawyer, so use this at your own risk.)

PROPER USE OF PRODUCT IDENTITY

The OGL allows for certain items within a work to be declaimed "Product
Identity." Such items are *never* Open Game Content, even if they
appear in part of the work that is explicitly marked as Open Game
Content. For the purposes of this example, I will use the example of
"Alice and Wonderland," and show what I believe to be the proper way to
release Alice as an NPC with backstory, and derive the maximum benefit
to both the publisher and the fans.

------------------ Begin license example -----------------

_Alice in Wonderland_ is copyright XXXX by Mary Mymax. She is released
under the terms of the Open Game License includied in Appendix 5.
"Alice in Wonderland", "Mama's Blue Dress," "Following the White
Rabbit", "Shuffling the Cards of Wonderland like a Bloody Spoon", and
the logo of a blonde woman facing right are trademarks or registered
trademarks of Mary Mymax.

DESIGNATION OF OPEN GAME CONTENT: All game rules, stat blocks, and
shaded text (insert example of formatting) are Open Game Content.
Please see Mary Mymax's web site for an erratta listing to identify
open game content mismarked as closed content.

DESIGNATION OF PRODUCT IDENITY: The five trademarks declared above, the
graphic design of a white border with blue lace, the story of Alice
gaining super powers by following a white rabbit down a magical hole
into wonderland, and the use of the Wonderland font for all text are
Product Identity.
