You'll need to remain curious. There were no comprehensive market studies done at the time. What is known is that TSR developed a reputation for being an unfriendly company, one that WotC worked hard to change. They lost marketshare for a number of other reasons, and stood on the brink of colapse when WotC bought them out. Ryan wrote an excellent article on the topic a couple of years ago.
