Now, out of a sense of professional curiosity, how many people here look
to other rpg systems or settings, or fiction for inspiration when it
comes to their writing (no worries, guys and gals, this isn't a witch
hunt for plagiarism, I'm merely curious ;D ). I'd start the ball
rolling and say some of the things I've written have been largely
inspired by Starship Troopers, the Shannara series, Torg, and various
DnD 1e adventures (Expedition to the Barrier Peaks especially).

I was inspired by the tv show Beastmaster (which only went 3 seasons),
when developing my fantasy setting. Nothing else has particularly
inspired me as much or at all like that show, except ancient myths and
legends (though in this case, I went out actively looking/searching for
such information, such as the real story of the Minotaur... very
interesting ;-).

In addition, the tv show, "The Lost World", and the PD work of Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle has inspired me to develop a setting with a short
series of adventures.

While it is d20, as I read the d20 Modern rules, I just felt they were
mostly perfect for my upcoming line, Wrestle (the game that combines the
action and entertainment of pro-wrestling with the tried and tested
rules of d20).

On the other hand, some of my text books from my previous year at
college have helped me flesh out various aspects of economics, law, etc,
in my fantasy setting, and an interesting book called the "Handbook of
Whisky" (ISBN:0-600-60491-8) has given me a greater respect for the
process of whisky making. This last source may eventually inspire me to
start working on a book on the topic.
