Copying copyrighted material for personal use is covered by fair use. I can 
in fact, stack up a thousand copies of a CD or poem or video game in my 
closet, and I'm not violating copyright law. (If I give one of those copies 
to a friend, though, while keeping a copy for myself, then I'm in trouble.)

That's irrelevant. Unless the copyright owner can prove that I *did* do 
that, they don't have a case.

Basically your understanding of copyright law is really, really bad. You 
need to study it before you muddy the waters any more with replies like 
this.
