It makes perfect sense. The core books are (of course) the best selling D&D 
books, with combined total sales of over a million units. This allows them to 
make those same sales all over again. Sure, not everyone will buy, but enough 
people will to make those books the best sellers of 2003. 

Personally, I'll happily pay $90 to get revised versions of all the 
rulebooks, especially a MM with a more functional layout.
