I like it because it keeps AC important going past 20th Level, something
that the ELH certainly suffers from.

Of course, I also use Defense Rolls (a DMG Rule I'd love to see in the SRD
as well).
How'd you deal with monks? Just a bigger Defense bonus? I ask because that's one of the things i think is "broken" in D&D3E: monks are too easy to hit. They're supposed to be the nimble unarmed fighters, and they aren't as good at hitting things as a fighter (or other fighting class), and aren't as flexible (after a couple of levels, it just doesn't make much sense to pick up a weapon), but trade this off for self-reliance and not being hit. Well, IME, it takes a fair bit of magic to keep up with the fighters in terms of AC, much less stay ahead (as i think they ought).
