I am currently using the extra percentage, but I've come to the realization
that I risk making a certain healing spell too powerful later on in the game,
because I need the damage at a certain percentage for it to be usable early on.
 I do know that some RPGs use battle power for spells because physical attacks
use weapons, making magic different in that respect.
