Great, the fallback is working properly now.

Any idea why it might not be working on this laptop anyway, an what
the minimum requirements actually are? I have DX9.0c installed, and
the dxdiag hardware accelerated D3D 7, 8, and 9 tests work. Intel
82830M integrated graphics, the specs page for which suspiciously says
"Not all of the new features of DirectX 9.0 are supported"
