I like this idea. I have to admit, I have been trying to say away from the old ways of building packages so I contributed to the problem. Regardless, +1 from me. I think that the idea of release-maintainer in general is a good one. It makes it more obvious who a contributor wants to talk to. Additionally, it makes it possible for the maintainer to concentrate on one thing, instead of running around dealing with issues related to several releases.
