I believe it would be beneficial to have all that is under python 2.6
to be also available under 2.7
It's mostly because of the historical reasons and build process.
Components using setup.py.mk automatically build python 2.6 and 2.7
versions, but for components using configure.mk, you have to do
something more complex (like for components/python/sexy-python).
