I had ported various bits for my Radeon 6870. I was awaiting our Xserver 1.18.3
merge as I'm working on the AMDgpu backend as well for newer cards.

Just take a look at pkgsrc x11/xf86-video-ati6
I've been using that for a long while now with a Radeon HD 5450 on recent
[pkgsrc] Xorg bits
unfortunately I run omnios so can't say how the KMS integrated in hipster
changes the equation.
