OK, did "pkg install mate_install" in a new BE, and it appears now that it _tries_ to start a logon greeter of some sort. Unfortunately, it doesn't stay up running long enough for me to see or do anything, and once it exits (on this laptop) the screen is left in a mode that vgatext doesn't know how to use. Last thing in var/adm/messages is:
