What is your way for accessing data stored on zfs from either Linux
or OpenIndiana ? I mean, when you boot into a different OS, can you
get the data visible right away ?

illumos is a major pain in the butt. No exFAT support. NTFS-3g is not packaged.
Even FAT32 support is shaky (the implementation is called PCFS, very slow and
not reliable). UFS is not maintained, and also not compatible with BSD. There
is no support for Linux Ext FS (even Ext2, which all BSD support).
The only logical choice is ZFS. But if you put illumos out of the picture, I
suggest Microsoft FS like exFAT (FAT32 if you are OK with the 4GB file size
limit and your drive is small enough), or NTFS for portability. exFAT has FUSE
implementation that available on all platforms I know (except illumos).
