If the build system doesn't find hdf5 at compile time, it will just disable f3d
and do everything else as usual, no harm done.
Note that Alembic also uses HDF5, and therefore it's making its way into
certain Foundry products among other things, so I think it's not going to be
such an unusual thing to find installed on VFX systems soon.
