Hmmm... I vaguely recall that somebody (Chris Foster? sounds like the kind of 
thing he'd do) did an experiment comparing the results of level-to-level resize 
versus top-to-each-level resize and found the results essentially identical.  
Maybe "disapproval" was really just advice not to bother if we couldn't 
demonstrate that the result would be any different?

It sounds totally reasonable to me now, especially if it's only triggered by an 
optional command-line argument (since I'd expect it to be quite a bit more 
expensive).  If you want the feature, please go for it, I have no objection.
