Oh, there's one more complication. Looks like the atomic intrinsics aren't available for all architectures. Somebody else told me they aren't available for ARM, maybe they are also not available for PPC, that would explain why it's not falling into the USE_GCC_ATOMICS case. I'll poke around and see what I can find.
