Got it fixed by redirecting OIIO to only use the release libraries. I'd do
a pull request but it's a one liner:

diff -Naur oiio-Release-1.2.1.orig/src/cmake/externalpackages.cmake

         # variables HDF5_INCLUDE_DIRS and HDF5_LIBRARIES.
     else ()
         find_package (HDF5 COMPONENTS CXX)
+        set(HDF5_LIBRARIES ${HDF5_LIBRARIES_RELEASE})
     endif ()
     if (VERBOSE)
         message (STATUS "HDF5_FOUND=${HDF5_FOUND}")

probably wouldn't hurt to add a comment saying why this is necessary.

Thanks,
Richard
