Hm... it does not seem to do what I expect. --fit 1000x100 will give me an image with exactly that width and height adding black margins. I want an image with 1000 with and a height according to the original aspect ratio.

I think you're looking for --fit.  It's similar to --resize, but it preserves 
the aspect ratio, resizing the image to the largest size (with the same 
original aspect ratio) that will fit into the size you specify.
