As a practical note, the first time I did this it was because it allowed files being actively rendered to be used before the 3D render was finished due to a last minute change requested by a client! A case where coding and testing being faster than the render as I started after the render :-) would not suggest this as a normal working practice - ignoring return codes is usually a bad thing, so the codes were conditionally ignored based on a Boolean knob.
