I have tagged Release-2.1.8.0-RC1. This is the release candidate for 2.1.
Please test. We will strive to keep the API locked and also to only add
critical bug fixes between now and the scheduled release on 1 December.

RB-2.1 is now irrevocably branched from master.

We anticipate the planned schedule to be as follows:

Today until 30 Nov: Testing of 2.1. Changes to 2.1 will be considered only for
critical bug fixes or build breaks. Meanwhile, anything riskier than that (even
if not breaking APIs) will go into master only for now.

1 Dec: Anticipated release of 2.1.9.0, a.k.a. the first official release of 2.1
as a supported set of releases recommended to use in production.

After 1 December:
RB-2.1 will be the supported branch and will continue to collect fixes and
occasional enhancements that are not ABI (nor API) breaking, with the usually
~monthly patch releases.
master will continue rapid development which may include arbitrary API breaking
changes. It will eventually become a release 2.2 (or beyond).
RB-2.0 (and future 2.0.x.y tags) will be obsolete and receive only important
bug fixes for a few months, then only critical bug fixes, then only extremely
critical bug fixes and only if specifically requested by somebody important.
All 1.x branches will be considered beyond obsolete and we do not anticipate
ever issuing new 1.x patches.
