Great, just to be super clear on where these stand: The first PR I mentioned (2640) is still under review but hasn't been merged anywhere yet. It should be merged into master in the coming days, and I will backport to 2.1, so it will be in the next 2.1.18 patch release, due on Aug 1. Until then, you'd need to incorporate the patch yourself (though the operative code change is just 7 lines, you could easily apply it by hand to master or 2.1 (or maybe even 2.0?), the rest of the changes in the patch are docs and tests).
The second PR I mentioned (2582) has already been merged into master (so it's ready now if you use master, or it will be part of an eventual 2.2 release). It involved too complex a set of changes to backport to 2.1, so it's only a 2.2+ feature.
