It's a bit more than that.
The base directories it looks in are:
the directories listed in env variable $OPENIMAGEIO_FONTS (':'
separated list of directories)
any directory in the following environment variables:
$HOME
$SystemRoot
$OpenImageIO_ROOT
the directories
/Library
c:/Windows
/usr
/usr/local
/opt/local
the directory one level above wherever the running oiiiotool binary
itself was located
and then for each of those, it will check subdirectories below there that have
the following names:
.../fonts
.../Fonts
.../Library/Fonts
.../share/fonts
.../share/Fonts
If you have fonts you want it to know about that aren't in ANY of those places
it already knows about, the easiest thing to do is just add that directory to
$OPENIMAGEIO_FONTS
