in my former company we used to discuss that, too.
IMHO, it is a purely academic request to make classes
persistence-capable when you do not have the 
source code.  But do you have any different 
experience?  

In any case, I agree that there should be 
as few constraints on pc classes as possible
to keep the persistence layer minimal intrusive.
