I guess you are right about the ODMG. Unfortunately there was never an offcial announcement clearifying the situation. But they never had any good documentation.

Or is there any opensource application that uses OJB and the ODMG api where I could learn anything.
We have several apps in our contributions package (http://db.apache.org/builds/ojb/1.0.rc4/db-ojb-1.0.rc4-contrib.tgz) and we have a lot of ODMG user code in our junit testcases (shipping with the source distro).
