Perhaps you could try to use a mysql or other db located in a ramdisk ? 
and backup it to disk sometime ?
Sorry if it's off topic, but as i had tested (as simple as cp -r 
/usr/loca/mysql to a ramdisk and do none  configuration if all the 
settings are set using relatives paths) the speed is amazing (you can 
also test to install a tomcat or other server). I wonder if somebody do 
this on production applications.... I agree that this need some memory 
but it's possible with little db or applications no ?
