Access to anonymous field data

Is there a way to get access to the data used for anonymous field 
descriptors?
I want the user to know that a foreign key value from the 
reference-descirptor did not match any primary key value in that class's 
table.  If OJB cannot find the primary key value, it makes the object 
null...
