UTFDataFormatException

Dear fellows OJB,
I am developing with a Mac system Jaguar X.2.3, with java 1.3.1.
I am stucked with an XML Parser error.
I can build and use OJB . It runs perfectly as it is.
All lib/*.jar are in my .cshrc Classpath.
But if I want to change the repository.xml file to suit my work , even if the document starts with:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
the Parser gives me this error:
[error] SAXParserImpl: java.io.UTFDataFormatException: Invalid byte 1 of 1-byte UTF-8 sequence
JEdit reports it and the java program at run-time when accessing this file.

Could you direct my readings to solve this error
