The Ranking Digital Rights project at New America seeks a full-time Program Associate based in Washington, DC. The position involves working closely with the project Director on a range of responsibilities including project research, writing, coordination and logistics. Internet and telecommunications companies, along with mobile device and networking equipment manufacturers, exert growing influence over the political and civil lives of people all over the world. These companies share a responsibility to respect human rights. The Ranking Digital Rights project aims to evaluate and rank the world’s major Information and Communication Technology (ICT) companies on policies and practices related to free expression and privacy in the context of international human rights law. In the Fall of 2014, we will carry out a pilot study for our Phase 1 methodology, focusing on Internet and telecommunications companies. A full ranking will be implemented in 2015. More information about the project’s activities and future plans can be found at http://rankingdigitalrights.org <http://rankingdigitalrights.org/> Responsibilities - Assist in drafting documents for internal use and external publication; - Assist in setting up (in coordination with an external contractor) and managing a research database; - Write blog posts and promote project-related information on social media; - Assist the Director in compiling materials for presentations and articles; - Attend and take notes at project-related meetings; - Assist in coordinating work of international and domestic project partners; - Help to organize events, meetings and conference calls; - Assist with project correspondence; - Contribute to the extent possible and as time permits to development of the project’s methodology; - Contribute ideas to the extent possible and as time permits to the ranking’s visual representation and media outreach; - Budget permitting, there may be opportunities for occasional travel to conferences or meetings elsewhere in the U.S. or abroad.
