You don't need to be a geek or an expert to participate - an interest and a willingness to get your hands dirty (digitally) making something is all that is needed. I'd also like to note that last week saw an Open Data Maker nights in Birmingham organized by Gavin Broughton (<http://www.meetup.com/OpenKnowledgeFoundation/Birmingham-GB/907622/>) and the previous week one in Vienna at the MetaLab. The nights are super-informal and really easy to organize - just pick a night, boot a meetup page at http://www.meetup.com/OpenKnowledgeFoundation/ (anyone can do this!), copy and paste the what + who and you are away!
