I confirm this bug - the annoyance of having the thumbnail view always
appearing upon startup (unless the document itself contains instructions to
open in bookmark view, or presentation mode, for example).
It would be useful to have the navigation panel available as a side bar, but
for the default state to be that the views be closed until selected by clicking
on thumbnail, contents, annotations, etc.
For now, I disable the navigation panel and use F7 to make it appear or
disappear. At least this state is conserved.
