Dear Albert, I updated poppler, but the problem still exists. For 'normal' pdf files, zooming works fine, the focus adjusts within split seconds (although not smoothly). But for pdfs such as maps (like the one I pointed out), it takes significantly longer than for evince or also google chrome. This is on Ubuntu 13.04 with Okular 0.16.3. Just want to mention it for future reference or in case someone else faces similar problems.
