There is such a need to identify these "series" that there is a book
published by the library association that is a guide to these:

http://www.alastore.ala.org/detail.aspx?ID=2418
Sequels, 4th Edition: An Annotated Guide to Novels in Series

I've seen it and it's huge (I'd love for it to be an open online
resource.... but it isn't).

Having these as lists or somehow connected in OL would be a great
service. I don't know of a comprehensive place for these online, but
there is a beginning in Wikipedia, such as:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Novels_by_series

All in all it doesn't seem terribly well developed, and yet there is a
definite need that perhaps could be filled in OL. Maybe we should
experiment with a field for "Book series" or add a field for character
names (since many series are held together by one or more characters,
e.g. Miss Marple or Kinsey Milhoun). That wouldn't help us with the
Star Trek series, or Discworld, though, so a series name definitely
seems to be needed.
