I can address the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) part of the question.

The metadata in the DPLA for BHL comes directly from the BHL (not the
Internet Archive); BHL does further metadata enhancement on the BHL portal
(e.g. merging, splitting serials, enumeration and chronology for serials,
etc.); the DPLA then points the BHL book viewer (which is an augmented
version of the IA book viewer), specifically, BHL adds additional
pagination information and also applies "taxonomic intelligence" (finding
species names occurances and linking out from them).

BHL then also provides links back from each volume to as stored at the IA
(to download PDFs, to download various other derivatives IA creates).

BHL will continue to provide DPLA with BHL metadata directly.
