There was a point in the past, though I am not at all sure when it was, where we temporarily removed the CAPTCHA on signups because it was getting caught in people's systems for some reason (that is, people who were blocking third party cookies through various methods couldn't see it and a host of other issues) I wonder if this corresponds with one of the upticks. Might be able to check the commits (pretty sure Anand did this one) to see if there is correlation there.
