Okay, here's another issue ... how does a typo in a Work record get edited if 
there's only one Edition??

I think that's correct, I'm not sure at all why that is. You may have 
noticed there are some items in which there is a Work and a single 
edition and some items in which the one edition IS the work and I think 
it has to do with various importing processes that functioned 
differently. Sorry to not be more help here.
