Anand - there is a code in the Leader of the MARC record for serial
publications - In a book, the leader is:

LEADER: 01732cam 2200349Ii 4500

For a serial the first "am" becomes "as"

LEADER: 01732cas 2200349Ii 4500

That particular record, however, is not a serial publication but
someone's "journal" in the sense of a diary. However, there are serial
publications that have been digitized, and if the MARC records are
correct you will find that "as" code in the leader.
